Is there reliability and validity in portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry?
Figure 1. X-rays are emitted from the unit which excite atoms in the sample being analysed; this results in the displacement of inner shell electrons. Outer shell electrons fall into the space left by the displaced electron, and in doing so emit fluorescence which is characteristic of each element. The intensity of the energy is proportional to the concentration of the element in the sample.
